The Rotary Club of Colombo Mid Town conducted a leadership workshop for bard members of three Interact Clubs sponsored by them namely Interact clubs of Gothami Balika Vidyalaya, Zahira College and Ilma International. The event was held at Ilma International auditorium and approximately 35 Interact board members attended.
The event commenced with the welcome address by Project Chairman PP G.S. Sylvester and a speech on ‘Our Purpose’ by President Aashiq Aminuddin. The first session was conducted by Nimethri Gunasekera, Clinical and Counselling Psychologist, Life Coach, NLP Transformation Coach and Visiting Lecturer on the topic of ‘Positive Attitude in Leadership’. The next session was on ‘Personal Branding’ and was conducted by Nevindee Amarasinghe, Public Relations professional, Speaker, Voice Over Artist, Branding Strategist and Communications Specialist. The third and final session was presented by Zafrana Nafees on the topic ‘Leader in You’. She is the Deputy General Manager – Strategic Marketing & CSR – ITX, Leisure cluster and Oki Doki of Expolanka Holdings PLC, Transformative Coach and Global Marketing Leader awardee. The event concluded with a team activity named ‘Paper Tower’ which focused on building leadership, teamwork and time management among the 3 teams.
Established in 1975, The Rotary Club of Colombo Mid Town has strived to make a positive difference in the community during its nearly 50 years of existence by carrying out impactful projects across seven areas of focus. At last year’s Rotary District Awards, the club received numerous accolades, including the prestigious Best Club (Joint) and Best President (Joint) awards, along with the esteemed Platinum Award for achieving District Citations. Additionally, several individual members of the club were also recognized for their outstanding contributions to the club and the district.
The Rotary Club of Colombo Mid Town continues to uphold its commitment to service and remains dedicated to making a positive impact on society. Through diverse projects and initiatives in all parts of the country, the club consistently strives to create a better future for all. Its annual signature fundraiser project held in Colombo “BLIND WALK” is part of a global initiative to raise awareness about blindness and encourage eye donations and coincides with World Sight Day. Further demonstrating their commitment to vocational service, the club organized the annual project “Lead Tomorrow” under the theme “Inspiring the future entrepreneur to restart Sri Lanka.” Emphasizing the importance of basic education and literacy, the club actively participated in the district-wide initiative called “Little Minds Strong Values” which involved conducting workshops aimed at instilling positive values in children.
In recent times the club established an English library at Somadevi Maha Vidyalaya in Sevanagala, along with donations of books and playground equipment to deserving school children. The club has also successfully completed a global grant project initiated a few years ago, which involved rehabilitating three irrigation tanks – Karagaswewa, Kuda wewa, and Tissawa Maha Wewa – to improve water supply for paddy cultivation in both seasons for local farmers. In April 2023, the club generously donated a much-needed Oxygen Concentrator Machine to the Shantha Sevana Palliative Care Centre, located near the Apeksha Cancer Hospital in Maharagama, providing vital support to patients with respiratory difficulties. The club also hosted the District Interact RYLA, a program designed to develop leadership skills among Interactors. Additionally, the club recognized exceptional individuals with Vocational Service Awards, honoring those who exceeded expectations in their vocational service contributions.
