Imagine a world where “Someone’s Daughter” isn’t a phrase evoking fear, but a symbol of strength and resilience. This is the vision driving the Rotaract Club of University of Sri Jayewardenepura’s powerful project, “Someone’s Daughter Vol. 6.” Through this flagship initiative, “Someone’s Daughter,” they’re making a powerful statement against a global issue: gender-based violence.
This impactful project, now in its sixth volume, takes a multi-faceted approach, raising awareness, providing support for victims, and advocating for change. It’s a testament to the power of young people to create a positive social impact.
“Someone’s Daughter” is built upon five key phases, each tackling a different aspect of the fight against gender-based violence.
The first phase aligns with the UN Women’s “16 Days of Activism” campaign. Utilizing social media platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram, the Rotaract Club disseminated vital information about violence against women, workplace harassment, and women’s empowerment. This crucial awareness campaign helped ignite
conversations and spark a movement within the local and global community.
Phase two, titled “UNCOVER,” served as a platform for amplifying real voices. By capturing and publishing the personal experiences of victims in video series, the project not only shed light on the realities of gender-based violence and workplace harassment but also earned public support for the fight against these injustices.
Moving beyond awareness, the third phase – “Voices Against Violence” – took the form of an industrial forum. Renowned speakers like Shanelle de Almeida, Umali Thilakarathna, and Yasu-E Karunarathne, delved into crucial topics like sexism in
entertainment, the legal landscape of gender-based violence, and its psychological impact. Discussions on cyber violence, the power of storytelling, and creating supportive environments for survivors provided valuable insights and actionable steps for the
future.
Phase four marked a historic moment for “Someone’s Daughter”. The “Walk4Her” initiative, a first for the project, saw a significant number of participants from multiple universities, Rotaract clubs, and even bystanders join the movement. Walking from Independence Square to Viharamahadevi Park, the event aimed to break barriers, challenge stereotypes, and empower women. The powerful message of speaking out against violence resonated through the streets, symbolizing a call to action for a safer future.
We are especially grateful for the immense support we received from our sponsors who played a vital role in making this event a success. The Journey Continues – “Someone’s Daughter Vol.06” isn’t over yet. Currently in its final phase, the project will culminate in a drawing competition and the publishing of an e-magazine. These final steps will serve as a lasting legacy of the project, capturing the voices and artwork that embody the fight against gender-based violence.
The Rotaract Club of University of Sri Jayewardenepura, through “Someone’s Daughter”, is setting an inspiring example. Their commitment, dedication, and strategic approach are paving the way for a future where every woman feels safe and empowered. Their story serves as a call to action for all of us – to join the fight, raise awareness, break the silence, and build a world where violence against women is a relic of the past.
